“Wisconsin is already home to a thriving clean energy cluster of enabling infrastructure, strong community and academic engagement, research and knowledge transfer, venture capital, entrepreneurship, workforce development, job growth, and a culture of collaboration. Together with representative clean energy partners, the College of Engineering, Department of Life Sciences Communication, and the Nelson Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison are organizing a Clean Energy Community Initiative, which seeks to advance the overall economics of clean energy within our region—Wisconsin and the upper Midwest—and facilitate a community-led, solution-focused clean energy transition. In partnership, we can build an engine that empowers communities, strengthens collaboration, identifies and closes technology and policy gaps, and transforms our cluster into a growing, evolving innovation ecosystem with long-term sustainability. This approach puts the challenges of the diverse communities in this region at the center, not the end, of the selection and definition process. Technologies are selected, functional specifications are defined, development and financing pathways are created such that social acceptance is reached from the beginning and the dedicated benefit to all communities in the region is built into the creation pathway. This noble and challenging goal needs the participation of all energy partners in the region in this process, and we are reaching out to learn about perspectives towards this goal as well as gather input about specific challenges and priorities. This talk will summarize the status of the emerging community formation process and invite open feedback, discussion, and engagement.” – Oliver Schmitz
