Offshore Wind:

Turbines in the Great Lakes?

June 14 , 2006, Fluno Center, Madison, Wisconsin

Program Summary
Wind energy deployment has increased exponentially over the past few years. The search for the windiest spots and open, developable land within each state has led many to explore the possibilities of building wind turbines in open waters. Midwest offshore wind energy proponents have naturally identified the Great Lakes as potential development sites.

This conference will discuss whether building offshore wind turbines in the Great Lakes is a viable, sustainable energy option. Presenters will discuss the findings from the “Great Lakes Offshore Wind Technical Gathering,” held in Toledo in early April of this year.

Others will present:

  • prospects for offshore wind energy
  • policy incentives needed to spur development
  • current deepwater technologies being developed for Great Lakes applications
  • risks associated with building in navigable waters, and the barriers to implementation.

Our panelists will also consider whether offshore wind development detracts from onshore prospects and fragments the wind energy movement.

Who should attend
This course is intended for commercial and residential energy buyers, competitive energy service providers, employees of consumer organizations and electric and natural gas utilities, energy utility practitioners, legislative staff, regulatory staff, state and local government personnel.
